A Red Blanket of Sand Falls on Sydney

23 09 2009

Sydney based religeous zealots might have been excused for celebrating the coming of the Rapture over the last couple of days as clouds of red dust blanket the normally green and blue sparkling city.  Photographers have been brave taking their precious gear out into the sand storms to take some really incredible photographs.  There are a number of galleries popping up on Flickr which are well worth a look.

i was thinking the exact same thing about taking cameras out. :) i’d far rather appreciate other people’s photos than try to explain to my insurance company why they HAVE to replace my camera.

hehe fine dust and a camera is a recipe for disaster but I’m awfully pleased they did get out to share these incredible images with us.

It’s so ODD and the pictures are mesmerizing. If I was there, I would be staring out the windows all day. It’s not something you see all the time and it evokes the imagination so I can see why religious zealots are saying it’s a sign or something.

Australia is in the middle of a drought. The central area is one huge desert and this fine dust is blown over the cities from time to time. At one point 75000 tonnes of dust was falling over New South Wales.

It’s like a snowstorm, and yet is not! Pretty sad to live there right now, sad and… interesting.

I saw so many photos yesterday and today in the news and online and everywhere! I even saw a photo of people walking around the city with face masks, and my first thought was, “Why did that person have their camera out in a dust storm?”
